Full when the total is more than R5,000 including VAT, and always for zero-rated supplies such as exports. Abridged (no customer details or quantities needed) when it’s R5,000 or less. At R50 or less no tax invoice is needed.
Yes, but a tax invoice must also show its amounts in rand, at the exchange rate on the day. Choose the currency in the panel and type the rate: the invoice then shows the rand figures too. If you’re not registered for VAT, an ordinary invoice can be in any currency you agree with your customer.
Within 21 days of making the supply, whether or not the customer asks for one.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, unless you tick “Remember my details”, which keeps your own details in this browser only.
What a South African tax invoice must include
A VAT vendor must give a tax invoice within 21 days of a supply over R50. When the total is more than R5,000 including VAT, it must be a full tax invoice: the words “tax invoice”, your name, address and VAT number, the customer’s name, address and (if they’re registered) VAT number, a serial number and date, a full description, the quantity, and the price and VAT. At R5,000 or less an abridged tax invoice will do, without the customer’s details or the quantity. Zero-rated supplies, such as exports, always need a full one.
Rand, and other currencies
A tax invoice’s amounts must be in rand. If you invoice in dollars, euros or pounds, choose the currency and type the exchange rate: the invoice then shows every amount in rand as well. If you’re not registered for VAT, you issue an ordinary invoice, which can be in any currency you agree with your customer, and which must never say “tax invoice”.
Zimbabwe and Namibia
If your business is in Zimbabwe or Namibia, choose it in the panel. In Namibia the invoice follows the Value-Added Tax Act: VAT at 15%, titled “Tax invoice”, with the amounts in Namibia dollars. In Zimbabwe, a VAT invoice has to come from a ZIMRA fiscal device, so the tool makes invoices without VAT there.
