How the repayment is worked out

South African lenders quote an annual interest rate and charge it monthly, so the monthly rate is the annual rate divided by 12. Each month’s interest is charged on what you still owe, and the level repayment is the amount that clears the loan, interest included, by the end of the term.

The legal maximum

The National Credit Act caps interest rates by type of credit, as a margin over the Reserve Bank’s repo rate: home loans at repo plus 12%, unsecured personal loans at repo plus 21%, and so on. It also caps the initiation fee and the monthly service fee (R60). The calculator tells you if a rate or fee you type is above the cap.

Paying early

You can pay extra, or settle the whole loan, at any time without a penalty. On large agreements, which include every home loan, the lender may add up to three months’ interest when you settle, less any notice you give.

We don’t offer credit, arrange loans or recommend lenders. If you’re struggling with debt, the National Credit Regulator can point you to a registered debt counsellor.
