How it’s worked out

The salary is a cost to the company, so it reduces the company’s taxable profit; the company pays 30% on what’s left and pays the rest to you as a dividend. You pay PAYE on the salary, and you and the company each pay social security on it. Dividends from a Namibian company are exempt from income tax for a resident.

Which mix is best

Because dividends are tax-free, the comparison is between your tax rate on the salary and the company’s 30%. Salary is cheaper while your rate is below 30%, which means up to N$550,000 a year. Between N$550,000 and N$850,000 your rate is exactly 30%, so it makes no difference; above that, salary costs more.

Before you decide

A salary builds a record of income for loans, pensions and social security benefits, and dividends can only be paid from profits. A 10% tax on residents’ dividends has been proposed in past budgets but isn’t law; if it’s enacted, the answer changes. Talk to your accountant before you change how you pay yourself.
