How the tax relief works

Contributions to an approved pension or provident fund, a retirement annuity and an education policy are deducted from your income before PAYE is worked out. So each dollar you contribute saves tax at your top rate, and the real cost is the contribution less that saving. Social security isn’t affected.

The N$150,000 limit

All these contributions share one limit of N$150,000 a year, N$12,500 a month, with no percentage limit. Anything above it gets no tax relief. If you already pay into a retirement annuity or an education policy, enter it in the last box: it counts towards the same limit.

Below the tax threshold

The first N$100,000 a year of taxable income isn’t taxed, so if you earn less than that there’s no tax to save. The contribution is still worth making for your retirement, but it costs you its full amount.
